GEDCOMS are a means of storing family information. You may download a zipped GEDCOM file for a particular family but you will need genealogy software in order to open the GEDCOM and read it. There is free software available on the Internet, which will allow you to read a GEDCOM. Some of these programs are:

GIM (free shareware for a year. A MSDOS program that allows you to download your family information and view GEDCOMS.)

Personal Ancestral File (Free software to create and store genealogical information).

Personally, I have never used any of these programs. I use Legacy, which is a great program with many features and yet it is reasonably priced in comparison with some of the other programs available.
